How I got into networking

Making choices about the future is not always a straightforward process. Sometimes, it means going back and forth, weighing the advantages and drawbacks of each option. Such was the case when I was younger and it took me quite a while to decide what I wanted to do in life.

As a teenager, I liked computer games and so I thought it would be exciting to learn how to design my own game. But I was good with numbers too, and the prospect of studying Economics seemed equally appealing for a while. So, after high school, I decided to give it a try and, much to my joy, I got accepted by the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest. However, while studying there, I came to the realization that this was not what I wanted.

After taking a break, I chose to study Computer Science at the Technical University of Moldova and, following graduation, I took an IT technician job in a university campus, to gain some experience. This is where I first learnt about Cisco certifications.

I signed up for a CCNA course led by an amazing instructor, who also became our mentor, constantly pushing us to become our best version and achieve our potential. It was a great course, not only because the material was admirably structured and delivered, but because we also had access to physical equipment, to test and apply our knowledge during the practical sessions.

While I was enrolled in this course, I also took part in an international competition, called the Net Riders, and came out fourth. This motivated me even more to continue and work towards the CCNA certification, which marked the start of a new chapter in my professional trajectory.

While a single, entry-level certification may not seem much, it can actually be a stepping stone in your professional development, as it almost always inspires you to learn more and pursue higher-level credentials which, in turn, get you better career prospects.
